Your Step-by-Step Prayer Path (AMCC Onboarding)

When you’re learning Islam, prayer can feel like the biggest step—and the most intimidating. That’s why AMCC’s New Muslims support focuses on real-life journeys: what do I do first, what if I don’t know Arabic, where do I go at the masjid, and what if I get it wrong.

Here’s a simple structured approach to help you grow steadily:

  1. Learn Wudu (Before Prayer)
  2. Learn Salat Basics (How to Pray)
  3. Learn Masjid Etiquette (How to Feel Comfortable)
  4. Attend Services (Including Jummah)
  5. Build Daily Worship Habits

Wudu Basics (Step-by-Step)

Wudu is your preparation for salat. Your local scholar/masjid may teach the steps slightly differently—ask AMCC if you want us to walk you through the exact method.

The goal of wudu

  • To cleanse yourself properly
  • To be ready for worship with calm and focus

Common Wudu steps (overview)

  1. Make intention in your heart (no need to say it out loud)
  2. Wash your hands
  3. Rinse your mouth
  4. Clean your nose
  5. Wash your face
  6. Wash your arms up to the elbows
  7. Wipe your head
  8. Wipe/clean your ears
  9. Wash your feet up to the ankles
  10. Repeat as taught by your instructor (if needed)

If you’re unsure about any step, AMCC can connect you with a new Muslim buddy or volunteer for hands-on guidance. Use the checklist-style support in the My Prayer Booklet (Free) to feel steady at home.

Connect With AMCC (Your New Muslim Buddy)

Prayer gets easier when you have a person to ask. AMCC can connect you with a new Muslim buddy/contact person, a small-group or one-on-one learning path, sisters/youth support (as applicable), and community introductions so you feel belonging, not isolation.

Learning Islam can affect your whole circle. If you need resources for learning at home or guidance for counseling referrals (if needed), AMCC can help connect you to appropriate next steps.

Zakat & Community Welfare Support (When Applicable)

AMCC also provides community welfare support, including guidance related to zakat-related needs and requesting help through community resources.

Salat Basics for New Muslims (How to Pray)

Salat is worship through set actions and words. As a new Muslim, your priority is starting correctly and building consistency.

What to expect your first time

  • You may feel nervous—this is normal.
  • People will understand you’re learning.
  • You can ask questions before or after prayer.

A beginner-friendly way to start

Focus on these essentials first:

  • Your readiness (wudu)
  • Standing and posture
  • Reciting what you can (even short reminders)
  • Following the imam and the movements

Do I need to know Arabic first?

You do not need to know Arabic from day one. Many beginner guides include short memorization steps, transliteration support, and simple reminders to help you follow along.

AMCC’s approach is gentle and realistic: we help you learn at your pace—with clarity and kindness.

Mosque Etiquette (So You Feel Safe, Seen, and Welcome)

You’re joining a community—not just attending a building. Etiquette helps everyone feel comfortable, including you.

Key manners new Muslims should know

  • Arrive a little early when possible
  • Follow the space guidance for sisters/brothers
  • Dress with modesty (ask AMCC if you’re unsure—don’t guess alone)
  • Keep your phone on silent
  • If you’re lost, ask—people expect questions from newcomers
  • Be respectful, quiet, and observant during prayer

Helpful tip for first attendance

If it helps, come with a buddy or contact person—AMCC can help you connect before you walk in.

Jummah for New Muslims (What to Know and How to Attend)

Jummah (Friday prayer) is a special weekly gathering. If it’s your first time, it can feel overwhelming—so AMCC breaks it down.

Before Jummah

  • Plan to arrive earlier
  • Use the restroom before prayer begins
  • Be mindful of modesty and etiquette

During Jummah

  • Listen and follow along as you can
  • It’s okay to learn step-by-step
  • If you don’t know what’s happening yet—watch, and follow the movements

Your comfort matters. You deserve support, not pressure. AMCC welcomes you with a learning mindset.

Video / Live Sessions (Bring Your Questions)

AMCC offers short classes with time for real questions such as:

  • Wudu walkthroughs
  • Salat basics practice
  • Understanding the Adhan: Call to Prayer
  • Mosque etiquette and first-time Jummah prep

Invite a friend too—learning together can feel even safer.

Adhan: Call to Prayer (What You Should Do)

The Adhan is the call to prayer—how you know prayer time has arrived.

When you hear the Adhan, you can:

  • Take a moment to feel ready and present
  • Make intention to pray
  • Prepare yourself for wudu and salat

AMCC can help you learn what the words mean in a beginner-friendly way, what to do right after hearing it, and how to stay calm if you’re new and unsure.

Daily Worship Habits That Build Confidence

Consistency grows when the goal is simple. Here are realistic habits for new Muslims:

  • Wudu reminders: keep a simple routine so prayer feels familiar
  • One learning step per day: learn a short dua, a movement, or a new meaning
  • Small improvements: prayer becomes easier as you repeat it
  • Ask questions without embarrassment: confusion doesn’t mean you’re failing—it means you’re learning

Learn Islam at your pace, with caring support.
